Frequently Asked Questions
What is galvanized steel used for? Galvanized steel is used for applications suitable for carbon steel (also known as plain steel) but where an additional level of corrosion resistance is required because the product might be outside and exposed to the elements, such as for agricultural applications like a grain bin.
What is the difference between stainless steel and galvanized steel? Stainless steel is chemically different from galvanized steel. Galvanized steel is a subcategory of coated carbon steel. Stainless steel is in a different family of metals altogether.
Is galvanized steel weatherproof? Galvanized steel is weather resistant as opposed to weatherproof. Galvanized steel is traditional carbon steel that has a zinc coating applied to the base metal. Given extended time and exposure the zinc galvanizing will weather off and corrosion (rusting) will occur.
Does galvanized steel rust? Yes. All steel will rust (or corrode) but galvanized steel won’t rust right away. Galvanized steel is protected by a zinc coating which is bonded with the metal underneath to prevent rust for a very long time.
Is galvanized steel better than stainless steel? It depends on the application. Galvanized steel is usually much less costly and easier to work with than stainless steel. However, stainless steel is much more resistant to corrasion and wear and tear.
What lasts longer - galvanized or stainless steel? Stainless steel will last longer in a variety of applications.
How long will galvanized steel last outside? The length of time a galvanized product will last outside before corrosion depends on the environment, but also the coating of the galvanized thickness. In typical environmental conditions galvanized products can last 20 years before requiring first maintenance.
