304 Stainless Steel Spinning

One of the most common and most frequently machined stainless steels is the austenitic type, such as grade 304.

Stainless steel alloy 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel and is a standard low-cost alloy that is suitable for parts that require forming or welding. It resists corrosion, heat, and oxidation and is the most weldable of any steel alloy which makes it the leading choice for a variety of commercial and industrial welding applications – including fusion and resistance welding. However, 304 is not magnetic.

Benefits of spun 304 stainless steel:

  • Excellent machinability and formability
  • Easily formed into a variety of complex shapes
  • Cost-effective
  • Hardens quickly and can be air-cooled.
  • Stress relief annealing can be performed for additional enhancements

It is excellent for welding and produces tough and ductile welds. 304 stainless can be cold worked to increase tensile strength and hardness.

Common 304 spun parts applications:

  • Tank heads
  • Hemispheres and cones
  • Hoppers
  • Air movement pants
    • Inlets
    • Wheels
    • Fan panels
  • Reducers
  • Filtration components

Standards:

  • ASTM/ASME: UNS S30400 / S30403
  • EURONORM: 1.4301 / 1.4303
  • AFNOR: Z5 CN 18.09 / Z2 CN 18.10
  • DIN: X5 CrNi 18 10 / X2 CrNi 19 11
